Description

Primary Purpose:

Train and retrain bus drivers, teach defensive driving and other programs, assist with accident investigation, student management and student discipline problems.

 

Qualifications

Education/Certification:

Valid Texas commercial driver's license (Class B)

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Knowledge of applicable district policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of supervisory practices
  • Ability to apply supervisory practices
  • Knowledge of training practices and regulations and preparing training material
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of commercial transportation vehicles
  • Knowledge of bus evacuation procedures of students including special needs students
  • Ability to perform minor maintenance and safety checks of commercial vehicles
  • Ability in perform student management techniques, including special needs students
  • Ability to evacuate students including special needs students during an emergency
  • Ability to train driving skills and teaching classes
  • Ability to drive commercial transportation vehicles
  • Knowledge of federal and state traffic laws and regulations

 

Experience:      

Three years of experience as a commercial vehicle driver.

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Train and mentor new bus drivers, substitute bus drivers, school district coaches, bus monitors and special education drivers; retrain drivers receiving traffic law violations or who are involved in accidents; design, maintain, update, and implement training programs; prepare and update transportation department staff records.
  • Teach defensive driving courses, bus safety, student management, school bus evacuation plans, and safety programs.
  • Facilitate, review and resolve critical student disciplinary (behavioral) problems.
  • Assist with accident investigation; assist school administrators and bus drivers with student management and/or discipline matters.
  • Substitute for schedulers, drivers, and office staff; observe and evaluate drivers' student management and driving skills.
  • Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules.
  • Drive bus to and from extracurricular activities.
  • Check bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify supervisor of needed repairs.
  • Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures. Complete required reports.
  • Keep assigned bus clean and fueled.
  • Supervise students while they board and leave the bus and cross the street.
  • Communicate with teachers and parents on a daily basis regarding student behavior while on bus.
  • Maintain discipline; report student discipline problems to appropriate administrator.
  • Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations.
  • Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
  • Inspect bus by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, and steering to ensure bus can be operated safely before driving.
  • Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as fast aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crow bar, and reflector.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and inform supervisory of any conditions that are not correctable immediately.
  • Report any hazardous conditions along the route.
  • Operate two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office.
  • Work irregular hours as needed.
  • Attend and complete required training program to maintain safety certification.
  • Keeps records on bus mileage, gas and oil consumption, and number of passengers transported.
  • Follow all safety and security procedures.
  • Work effectively within a team.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:  

None, although position serves a lead for bus driver.

School bus, safety equipment (flares, reflective signs), fire extinguisher and personal computer
