Primary Purpose:
Supervise daily activities of grounds maintenance operation to ensure district grounds are safe, neat, and attractive.
Education/Certification:
Valid Texas driver’s license
Special Knowledge and Skills:
- Knowledge of gardening and landscape
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and landscape plans
- Ability to operate heavy equipment, including backhoe and trencher
- Ability to operate riding or power mower, power tools, and hand tools
- Ability to direct and supervise personnel and coordinate grounds operations
- Acceptable driving record
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions in English
- Ability to communicate with others in English
Experience:
Five years experience in gardening and landscape maintenance
Two years supervisory experience
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Assign all grounds work and oversee completion
- Advise Director of Facilities and Construction if contract labor is needed
- Assign priority to work orders and process them, including tracking of labor and material use
- Estimate the cost and time required for special projects and order materials
- Interpret blueprints, plans, and sketches to carry out landscape designs
- Establish care and watering schedules, including spraying, fertilizing, pruning, et
- Operate and maintain equipment used for grounds operations, including backhoe, trencher, tractor, riding and power mowers, et
- Inspect grounds and facilities and initiate needed repairs, including the building and repair of fences and gates
- Monitor sprinkler systems and make arrangements for repairs as needed
- Instruct assigned personnel on proper and safe use of tools and equipment
- Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures

- Coordinate the storage and use of all grounds equipment, tools, and supplies
- Prepare, implement, and maintain preventive maintenance and repair procedures for grounds equipment and tools
- Order equipment and supplies and maintain accurate records
- Recommend replacement of existing equipment
- Conduct annual inventory of physical equipment and supplies
- Assist in recruiting, screening, training, and evaluation of grounds employees
- Assist skilled workers with repair and maintenance of district facilities
- Inspect building exterior and interior, playground equipment, and grounds; perform maintenance and minor repairs
- Detect and report needed major repairs on building structures and their systems, including lockers, furniture, and equipment
- Complete repairs as requested on work orders or by Director of Facilities and Construction
- Assist with mowing and detailing of district grounds
- Assist with relocation of furnishings, such as desks, tables, chairs, file cabinets, etc.
- Move, install, assemble, and repair all school furniture and playground equipment as needed
- Hang pictures, mirrors, blackboards, bulletin boards, projection screens, towel dispensers, soap dispensers, and other items as required
- Install door and window assemblies and hardware, including window glass and screens
- Install ceiling and flooring materials
- Operate light truck to transport furniture and equipment throughout district
- Work irregular hours and respond to after-hours emergency calls as needed
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or other administrator that are consistent with the general requirements and qualifications for the position.

Required to operate power equipment such as mowers and tractors; required to take precautions when operating equipment with cutting potential and to avoid exposure to insecticides and other landscaping chemicals and their fumes; required to wear protective gear such as gloves or masks; exposed to noise from power equipment; grounds maintenance requires working outdoors in inclement weather; required to work from ladders or scaffolds; required to take precautions to avoid injury from debris due to the use of a chain saw or using other power equipment. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and hazardous conditions and requires frequent district wide travel.
